THE GREATER ELLAND HISTORICAL SOCIETY ANNUAL TRIP

 9th June 2012

RIPON CATHEDRAL AND THE BLACK SHEEP BREWERY

The 2012 Annual trip was once again a resounding success as 53 members and friends travelled in style aboard one of ‘Yelloways’ iconic coaches along the A1 up to Ripon for a tour of its magnificent Cathedral. We arrived in Ripon just after 9-30 and we were greeted in the Cathedral by Mr Ron Metcalfe and his team.

Refreshments were served before being split into four groups each led by a superb tour guide who took us around the sights and sounds of the Cathedral in an hour and a quarter of wall to wall history and enthralling tales about the incredible building and its architecture. Due to the planned schedule we had to leave by 11-30 but everyone agreed that the Cathedral staff had done us proud and the day couldn’t have started better.

At 11-30 we left the Cathedral and headed back to the coach for the short drive to Masham and the Black Sheep Brewery. On arrival at the Brewery we were each given a token for half a pint of Black Sheep Ale and a superb lunch of assorted sandwiches and soup.

After lunch we split into two groups for the Brewery Tour which took just short of an hour but unfortunately the weather proved unkind for those who wanted to walk into Masham Village but a variety of cakes and coffees and the extensive gift shop kept us amused and not to mention thefew pints of ‘Glorious’ Black Sheep Ale to wash down a very enjoyable annual trip and one of the best attended for a while.
As always messages of thanks were sent to Ron Metcalfe at Ripon, Sue Dempsey at Black Sheep and Jonathan and Driver Dom at Yelloways Coaches but the big thankyous must go to yourselves for making this trip a success.
