Annual Dinner 2025
The Society’s Annual dinner was held on Wednesday 5th March at The Elland Golf Club, Hammerstones Road, Elland. This venue has been used for a number of years and again provided comfortable surroundings for this event.
A group of forty members and friends were treated to a delicious three course meal which was well received by the group. Thanks go to Margaret Moore who opened the evening by saying Grace before the meal.
Following the meal, the guests made a loyal toast to the King.
The event was rounded up with a talk by Rod Dimbleby an expert on the Yorkshire Dialect. Memories were rekindled when boys wore short trousers, built dens, and used pram wheels to make buggies. Houses did not have running water and had to share outside toilets. Most families would use tin baths once a week.
Yorkshire has a colourful array of words and sayings that add charm and humour to conversations. Rod challenged everyone to explain some Yorkshire phrases:
Fancy a brew? Ow much! Daft as a brush. Ay up.
The importance of the apostrophe was explained.
Which famous film is this?
T’ Good, t’ Bad and t’ Ugly.
The evening was concluded with thanks being passed on to Rod for his talk, the Chef, and staff for producing a super meal and to Rose, Margaret, and Doreen for organising this year’s dinner.
